Front axle not engaging...
« on: November 30, 2009, 03:45:03 AM »
The axle on my 94 B4000 will not engage. It has the push button selector and the factory automatic hubs. It does make a click under the cab when I try to engage it. Any ideas?

First, I would check the fuse to see if it has blown.

Second, it may be your transfer case shift motor. They are known to go out at times.

After you hear the click, put the truck in park (or turn it of and set the brake if its a stick.)get out and try to turn the front drive shaft with your hands.  If it turns then the transfer case isnt engaged and that is where your problem is, but if it wont turn, then your problem is in the diff, axles, or hubs.

My 1998 Ranger 3.0 Manual has this problem except that I do not hear the "click" .
Has anyone any way of replacing these shift motors with a manual lever ?

Thanks , John

I'm pretty sure I've heard of a way to get under there and engage it using a wrench, but I havent actually heard of someone putting a lever on an electric shift case...

I toyed with the idea of making up a manual conversion for my electric tcase, but since the shifter shaft is on the back and must rotate perpendicular to the transmission (were as a manual case has the shifter on the front and rotates inline with the trans) it would be very difficult to make something reliable.  If you remove the shift motor, then you can use a pair of vise grips to shift it (there is even a shift pattern cast into the t case) I shifted my t case that way for a while.lol  I ended up getting a good a deal on a manual case, so I put that in.

I'm going to flat tow my '91 race truck. It has the electric t.c. Can I shift it into neutral with the vise grips? Also has auto hubs, can I take man. hubs off another truck to swap in?

If you take the shift motor off the shaft can be turned with ViseGrips, there is even a shift pattern cast into the case under the shift motor.

Do you have the Dana 35 or 28 up front?  The hubs are NOT interchangeable between the two the spline count is different.  Not only will you have to swap hubs, but you will need the spindle nuts for the manual hubs because the manual hub wont fit over the stock spindle nuts.

Sorry, the 28 hubs wont work on the 35.  It would be nice if they did since I have a brand new WARN 28 hub and I would like to have spare hub in the tool box.
