4.0 swap
« on: February 06, 2010, 08:10:15 PM »
hey guys after i get my reg cab put on the ex cab frame and get it all bolted up and painted, im gonna do a 4.0 swap to ditch the blown 2.9

1) will my 2.9 5speed[fm145] bellhousing bolt up to the 4.0 engine? or will i need the 4.0 bellhousing?

2) if i use a early ford ranger 4.0, will all of the wires be color coded and plug together? will i need to do any splicing? if so its not that big of a deal unless i got a hell load to do.

3)will i be able to use the stock motor mounts?

thanks guys

oh and it will be going in to an 88 cab on an 86 frame

I don't know why you shouldn't use the 95. Other people pipe up, please. I've also heard the 90 and 91 are almost plug and play but no first hand experience. Take pics before and after, especially wiring. I've not done the swap myself but have researched it.Get the wiring harness and the ecu from the donor truck, or exploder, also the tranny, it's stronger than your stock one, but the orig. will work. Check that "other site" again, it has more info than just that page I showed you. There is a good article on wiring. You can re-pin the harness for your new ecu, mind boggling but can be done. This is another good site for researching-http://www.fordfuelinjection.com/index.php?s=TFI&submit=SEARCH. Heavy reading.Any ways, good luck.

from what i found it could be alot of splicing
so for my swap im goin to use the wiering harnes from my 92 exploder the dash and gage cluster so all i have to mess with is splicing for the fule pump.

make shure that your computer is for a 4.0 with the mauel trans or it will trip all kinds of codes
I have your jeep thing and now it hurts when I pee.

2.9 to 4.0 is a relatively easy swap.  You will need to run a few wires and get the 4.0 ecu.  The 2.9 and 4.0 have the same bolt pattern on the trans and I believe the same motor mounts. Exploders, BII's and Rangers are the same beast from the doors forward, so the same things need to be addressed.
