I was wondering how paypal works when you receive a payment. I have used paypal many times in the past, but never have received any payments, just sent them. I have been wanting to sell some crap on eBay, but do not know how the paypal receiving payment works. Do I have to have my bank account on paypal or can I do it without having it on there? Right now I only have my debit card on it.

You can link it to a bank account, or it will just sit in your PayPal account. It will spend whatever money you have in the PayPal account before it charges your card then next time you buy something.

I have mine linked to my checking account but you can also get a check sent to you from paypal. Whenever I do stuff on there I just send the request payment to the email, i get the payment, and then it takes 2-5 days once i ask it to transfer to my bank account to actually get there.

Mine is also linked to my checking account. Works out great when I buy something and theres not enough funds in the paypal account. When I receive payments, it goes into the paypal account. And I have the debit card I can use anywhere or I just transfer it into my checking. If its a small amount I just leave it because I know it will get spent sooner or later. Usually sooner since I'm always buying crap off ebay.
